When and Where

The twelfth Cape Town GeekDinner, Lucky Litchi, will be held towards the end of January 2009 on Thursday the 29th of January, at Yum in Vredehoek. Be there at 18:30 for 19:00.

Address: 2 Deerpark Drive, Vredehoek
OpenStreetMap: link
GPS: -33.942816,18.420635

Still Needed

GeekDinners are community-organised events. We'd love for you to help out with the organising - sign up to the planning mailing list and chip in if you can.

For this dinner, we still need:

  • Sponsorship - the dinners are organised on a volunteer basis, but if you or your company would like to help out in any way, we would be very grateful for the support

Agenda

  1. Welcome
  2. 1st talk session
  3. Starters
  4. 2nd talk session
  5. Mains
  6. 3rd talk session
  7. Dessert
  8. Slideshow Karaoke
  9. Open mic

Talks

We want short, interactive talks - a quick overview of a cool idea, or an interesting way of looking at things. We prefer to stay away from the how, and the technical nitty-gritty, and get an idea of the what or maybe the why.

We like to keep the talks short - about five minutes, plus questions. Bring your slides on a USB stick if you have any, we will provide a laptop and a projector.

Talks offered

If you have something you'd like to share, please offer it.

  • Lessons from Biomatrix Systems Thinking Tania (Systems failure. Ran out of time. Next time.)
  • Right now I'm again researching payment service providers, banks and their charges (ie what you need to pay to accept credit cards, or process debit orders, online). If anyone shows any interest here (like adding this to the 'talks wanted list', I could do a talk listing the various players, the charges, and comparing the SA vs international. Boring boring... The talk will be entitled Why Geeks should eat organic food instead :) Ian
  • The organic food isn't working on my infected wisdom tooth, which has spread its infection everywhere - I'm sick. :( Apologies
  • A talk about the concept/philosophy of the extended mind. Brad
  • Mike Stopforth is going to be in town on the night of GeekDinner, so Jonathan 3 and I (Kerry-Anne) thought we'd ask him to stop by and give a talk. He's going to tell us about a few of the lessons they've learned while building Afrigator, and touch on how to actually implement your ideas and get them out there.

Talks wanted

If you'd like to hear about something, let us know.

  • Something about the economy, central banking and alternative banking systems - Joe
  • I'd like to hear Adrianna talk about developing for the Karoo Array Telescope - MJW
  • I'd also like to know why I still can't accept payments in PayPal (what law is causing the problem?) and if there are alternatives that won't cost me a fortune for accepting international payments - MJW
  • I second the request for a foreign payments talk. Maybe next time Ian? - APM

Slideshow Karaoke

This is where somebody presents a talk based on slides that they have never seen before, on a topic chosen by somebody else. This month, Jonathan Endersby will be presenting on slides prepared by Kerry-Anne.

Remember

  • Make sure you tag your blog posts, flickr photos, etc, with "GeekDinner" and make sure your feed is part of Planet GeekDinner before the event. If you add your blog under the "Include Me" section, a planet admin should notice it and add you.
  • Please blog about the event, linking to the venue and the wine sponsor - we like to give them positive props and link-love as one way of saying thanks.
  • Please order some wine from the wine sponsor!
